Maths

It is our aim that all children at Eyres Monsell Primary School have a positive attitude towards maths and see themselves as mathematicians.

Through a stimulating and challenging curriculum our children will develop skills to enable them to reason mathematically, carry out mental calculations efficiently, and to equip them for their future lives both in education and beyond.

Our aim is to ensure that our children have a secure understanding of mathematical skills and concepts and are able to recall and apply their knowledge quickly and accurately.

The children will develop mathematical reasoning and learn to solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding whilst seeking solutions to problems.

We teach maths daily and follow the 2014 National Curriculum.

We use the Leicester City Approach to Calculation to structure the range of calculations and methods children are taught in each year group.

In KS1 and KS2 children will also take part in daily ‘No Nonsense Number Facts’ sessions to develop fluency and accuracy in calculations.

We follow the White Rose scheme of work in our main maths teaching in Years 1-6 which supports us well in providing opportunities for reasoning in every lesson for all children.

Our children will be taught and develop their mathematical thinking through the use of CPA (Concrete, pictorial and abstract). This  means that to support their learning children will use a range of methods – they may use concrete objects such as cubes, base ten materials or counters, they may draw pictures or images to help them or they may work abstractly by writing number sentences and using mathematical symbols.
